Hefty Hanna
Hanna had previous problems with being bulimic and overweight. The one person that made fun of her the most for being "hefty" was Alison. Eventually, the nickname Hefty Hanna was given to her. A couple select episodes have flashbacks to when she was overweight and being teased. According to Charles Cooley and the Cooley's Looking Glass Self theory, "the feedback we receive from others helps shape our identities" (3). Alison did nothing to help Hanna with her weight. In fact, Alison was focused more on hurting Hanna's self esteem instead of helping.
Once Alison disappeared, Hanna started becoming friends with new people and started losing weight. She did this over the summer so by the time they went back to school, she was skinny and popular. Losing the weight and becoming popular also led to Hanna becoming Homecoming Queen. As scary as it was to have Alison go missing, it is safe to say that it was the best thing for Hanna's self esteem and self image.

Maggie and Malcolm
Before Aria came into Ezra's life, he had a previous relationship with Maggie (pictured left). Seven years after the relationship ended, Maggie came back to Ezra and informed him that she had a child, named Malcolm, and he was the father. What Ezra does not know, is that Maggie only came back and told him this because she wanted to make sure that Malcolm had a fatherly figure in his life. She was too insecure to go find out who the real father was so she settled with Ezra because she knew he would be more than willing to take on the role. This demonstrated Aron and Aron's Self-Expansion Theory.
Guerrero states that the self-expansion theory "helps explain how identity influences the development of close relationships after first impressions are made" (4). She made a previous relationship with Ezra and came back to him because she was too self conscious to do anything else. By coming back she was trying to expand her identity so that she could form a family for Malcolm's sake.
